So. its been about 3 months since I broke my leg. There are some massive positives;
I couldn't do anything without assistance, walking, getting into bed, getting washed, changed. Anything I did was a 2 person job (Thankyou Jenna!) Now I can walk without crutches, I can walk and put full weight on my leg. I don't limp! I can (and do) walk the dog. I can drive. I can pretty much do anything now! So feeling really positive I had a rehab plan. To start doing weights and cycle. Mr Haslam the surgeon said it would be a really good idea to cycle and swim. Swimming has been tough but cycling is an easier option. Luckily Karl Clark from Tickhill running club was selling an exercise bike. So I snapped it up for the bargain price of £10! and its a cracker! What more could you ask for, for £10! As soon as I got the bike I made special efforts to get in the garage twice a day and cycle away! I could see an improvement nearly straight away. In the first few attempts to cycle I couldn't even get my leg to go round without coming off the pedal because my leg wouldn't bend that far. Within about a week I had lowered the seat and I felt I was cruising! I had an apt with the surgeon Mr Haslam coming up and wanted to show him how well I was doing. The only issue now was my knee was quite swollen, it was bending, but it wasn't as free as it had been. after the appt and seeing the physio it turns out I was doing way too much and the strain on my leg had taken its toll! looking back I should have realised that going from a shattered tibia plateau to cycling 30km each day was a bit too much! so I stopped cycling altogether to get the swelling down. My knee is a nice size now so I'm taking baby steps. 5 mins cycling a day. Slowly building it up each week. Im also at physio each week at the hospital. Its like circuit training and every exercise is designed to strengthen the leg. I've been to 2 sessions so far and can feel a difference, I'm not getting ahead of myself and will take each week as it comes. My fear was I'd never be able to run again but they are super confident I will be running again. I was told about a month but i'll see how I feel! Its very frustrating not been able to do what I love. I've put on half a stone since the accident. I know its not a massive amount in 3 months but running was my way of keeping my weight down. If I felt podgy id go for a 10 mile run. I just need to find other ways of keeping fit. The weight training is helping but I definitely need to be strict with everything. My goal is to lose the half stone by the time we go on holiday which I think is more than achievable! Anywho's lets hope my next blog in about a months time is full of positivity! |
